Girls talk. A lot. And not just about shoes. Yes, boys, we talk about you. A lot!
My girlfriend recently started dating what seems to be this really nice guy. She's really into him, but he's making some common dating mistakes. And that got me thinking about the mistakes guys made during my dating years and the mistakes my girlfriends have been on the wrong side of. Oh where oh where to begin...
So I thought I could save you guys out there some drama by just laying it out on the table. Here are a few of my favorites.
Mistake #1: Telling (or texting) the young lady that you will call her in the morning (or anytime, for that matter) and then you don't call.
I know that women can sometimes be demanding, but if you offer up a call - without any prompting from the woman - and then you don't do it, we only get mad. And we know you don't like that!
Mistake #2: Telling her you love her too soon.
As soon as you tell a woman this, and if she has the same feelings, it takes the relationship to an entirely other level. Your girlfriend will then feel entitled to your time and will be less understanding on guys' night out. Or, it may have the opposite effect. As another friend told me, "I had only been dating a guy for two weeks when he told me he loved me. I dumped him the next day!" Oops! Another one bites the dust!
Mistake #3: No contact for more than 24 hours.
No, we don't want you calling every hour on the hour to see where we are, but if we get used to your attention we'll want it. And we'll get mad if we don't get it. Do you see a pattern here?
Mistake #4: Making plans or promising to get together and then wussing out ... all the time.
I know we all can't see into the future to know what's going on next Sunday, and a few broken dates are acceptable. But if this becomes a habit, you will get dumped. No one likes to be disappointed.
Mistake #5: Talking about old girlfriends within weeks of meeting your woman.
Give it some time guys before you bring up how wonderful or horrible your most recent ex was. If she was wonderful, we'll wonder how long it will take before you get back together. If she was horrible, we don't want to listen to you whine about it. It's done, it's over, move on.
My advice: Calm down and take a deep breath. There's no guarantee for smooth sailing in the dating world, but avoid these common mistakes guys (and girls) make when starting a relationship and things may look brighter!
